The story

A stunning cup from Southern Rwanda

The Ibisi Mountain washing station sits in the hills of Southern Rwanda, a short drive from Nyungwe Forest, a national park known for its biodiversity. Local farmer Bernard Uwitije grew mostly commodity coffee until 2015, when he saw the potential of specialty processing in partnership with Rwanda Trading Company.

Rwanda Trading Company was founded in 2009 to create positive social impact, building resilient, transparent supply chains that give smallholder farmers more economic security. RTC processes and exports 25 percent of Rwanda's annual coffee production.

Ibisi Mountain earned a spot among the top 40 coffees in the Rwanda Cup of Excellence, and we're thrilled to have this natural-process microlot in our seasonal lineup.

Why we picked it: Rwanda is historically famous for classic washed profiles, but we wanted something with a heavier finish and specifically looked at several natural & experimental processed microlots. The luxurious mouthfeel of this coffee along with an underlying freshness and sweetness can give an olive oil sensation. The citric note is pleasant and lacks the sharp sourness that we've often found with neighboring origins.
