Story
We wanted to bring in an African coffee that was distinctly different from the others we've released in the past, so we looked for a crop that included the SL28 varietal of coffee beans. This variety is rarely found outside of Kenya, and lends to the distinct texture and flavor of Kenyan coffee. This coffee is VERY fruity, but not in the way you might have experienced from, say, a Ethiopian coffee. No blueberry or strawberry here! Instead you'll get a strong lime citrus-y undertone, with lighter notes of Earl Grey, Hibiscus, and Brown Sugar atop it. It's an excellent coffee for a pour over, and Rainforest Alliance Certified at the farm.

Coffee Background
This coffee was grown at Nyeri Hill Estate, a multi-faceted farm located in the central part of Kenya. Here, management focuses on cultivating coffees that shine while also prioritizing the community's long-term sustainability, both from environmental and social perspectives. The organization allocates part of its profits to academic development (with Nyeri High School), professional growth (with Kamwenja Teachers College) and community healthcare (with Mathari Mission Hospital). Along with these social commitments, the leaders at Nyeri Hill focus on reforestation in 250 hectares of the estate, preservation of natural vegetation to encourage biodiversity, and soil retention through solutions like Bermuda Grass cultivation. Nyeri Hill Estate is one of the first coffee farms established in east Africa, with first seedlings planted in 1914. Today, they harvest three main varietals: SL28, SL34, and Riuri II. SL28 is a varietal rarely seen outside of Kenya, and is part of what makes Kenyan coffees so distinct.
