If you're looking for a brewer that is affordable, portable and makes insanely good coffee, then look no further.

Let me introduce you to the Aeropress.

I personally used this device to brew my morning coffee for about five years, and still do periodically. It's got my personal seal of approval!

Here's what you need to know.

Aeropress Highlights

Aeropress produces a smooth, rich, and flavorful coffee. It tends to have less bitterness than other brew methods and no grit (or chewy body) like you'd get with a French press.

  • Rich Taste: low acidity and bitterness
  • Quick Brewing: takes about 2 minutes, and simple steps
  • Easy Cleanup: low effort and low mess
  • Versatile: make a regular cup of coffee, espresso-like short pour, or cold brew

Why I Love It

The Aeropress is exceptionally portable.

When we travel, I bring always bring one along. You'll need to come prepared with ground coffee (or a grinder). For short trips, I like to pre-grind my beans and bring them along in a coffee-friendly tin.

The coffee from Aeropress is incredibly smooth and can be quite concentrated depending on the coffee-to-water ratio used. In my opinion, it's the closest thing to espresso without spending hundreds of dollars on an espresso machine.

The device is simple to use, store, and clean. If you compost your spent coffee grounds, it makes the process super simple.

Again, I absolutely love this product. Particularly with the "clear" look that we stock. But it isn't for every person, or every situation.

A few things to keep in mind,

  • Not great for a crowd. This is a single-serving coffee brewer and prepares 10 ounces at a time. If you're trying to serve a lot of people fast, then it's probably not the right device for the situation.
  • Don't run out of paper filters. This is no different from any filter coffee brewer. If you run out of filters, then you're SOL. But I found it's something that happened more often to me with the Aeropress, maybe because each batch is only for a single serving. A solution I found is to use a metal mesh filter rather than paper. We hope to stock those soon bc they are easy to clean and good forever.
  • Use the right size mug. This device is designed to pour directly into a mug or carafe, but if you're using a wide-mouth container, then pouring can get a bit precarious.
  • Use a goose-neck kettle. Because the Aeropress has a narrow opening for pouring in ground coffee and hot water, I'd always recommend using a goose-neck kettle. Yes, you can make do with a traditional tea kettle, but it's always going to be safer with the directional pour spout of a goose neck.

Great For Gifting

Aeropress is a great gift if you're not looking to break the bank. I've probably given half a dozen of these to friends and family - including coffee lovers and out-of-town family who needed a decent brewer for the next time we visit.

How much coffee does AeroPress Clear make?

This device can brew up to 3 shots of espresso-style coffee, or one 10 fluid ounce cup of coffee (or cold brew) per brew cycle.

What grind size works best with AeroPress Clear?

Aeropress recommends a medium-fine grind size, which should be leveled in the device before pouring water. From personal experience, I've found that pushing the plunger becomes more challenging to operate as the grind size becomes finer. But there is also some benefit in flavor extraction and body to use a finer grind size. I recommend to experiment with your grind size, starting larger and moving smaller until you find your happy medium.

What material is used in the construction of this device?

It's plastic and rubber, which makes the Aeropress both light and durable. I used mine multiple times per day for 5+ years before I encountered any durability issues - the chamber seemed to warp slightly after extended & intense use.

I believe Aeropress also makes a new glass-constructed version which I haven't tried yet, and we don't carry it in the shop. I do like the idea of minimizing plastic, so we may add it at a future date.

Coincidentally, the Tritan copolyester TX1001 used in the construction of AeroPress Clear was produced by Eastman, which was my first professional job. Making plastic.

This particular plastic is certified for food equipment applications (NSF/ANSI 51) and drinking water systems (NSF/ANSI 61). It is BPA and phthalate free.
